Puzzle and Dragons, the World of Mystic Wiz and Dragon Quest as most-enjoyed games 2013
MMD LABO conducted the “2013 survey on actual usage of smartphone applications” among 560 men and women of the age 20 or over who have smartphones, from 18th to 21st December 2013.
The survey is to learn the most-used smartphone apps and game apps in 2013, and the apps they stopped using.
■ Top 3 categories of apps for the most-used in 2013: free call/chat, SNS and game
Smartphone users (N=560) were asked which category of apps they used the most in 2013. The survey revealed “free call/chat (30.5%)” as the most-used followed by “SNS (14.5%)” and “game (9.5%)”.
■ The category of the most-played game app in 2013: puzzle
Respondents were asked about game apps for smartphones where 52.5% answered they used those apps.
The “puzzle game” was the category that 48.0% of game app users (N=281) enjoyed, followed by “breeding, gardening” with 7.1% and “simulation” with 6.4%.
Game app users (N=281) were then asked whether or not they have paid for games over the last one year and 36.7% answered “yes”. As to the amount of money they spent, out of total users who have paid for games (N=103), 23.3% answered “501 – 1,000 yen”, 14.6% said “301 – 500 yen” and 13.6% stated as “1- 300 yen”.

Survey asked the game app users (N=281) which game they played the most this year in each category of puzzle, adventure and other games. The results were as follows.
Puzzle game users totalled 77.9% (N=219), who were then asked the names of puzzle games they played the most this year. Ranked in as 1st was “Puzzle and Dragons (30.1%)” followed by “LINE Pokopan (16.9%) and “LINE POP (11.9%)”.
Adventure games were enjoyed by 31.0% of respondents. Adventure gamers (N=87) played “The World of Mystic Wiz (33.3%)”, “LINE WIND runner (25.3%)” and “Love Live! School Idol Festival (8.0%)”.
Finally, 34.9 % of respondents were users of game apps excluding puzzles and adventures. These users (N=98) played “Dragon Quest VIII (19.4%)”, “Rage of Bahamut (14.3%)” and “Chain Chronicle (10.2%)”.
